The Italian, who led the race from start to finish, was pipped by a hundredth of a second by Greece’s Apostolos Christou, who finished in 52.27 seconds. There was a gap behind them: Pavel Samusenko took bronze in 52.57, three tenths of a second behind the winner. For Ceccon, it remains a top-class time of 52.28, but above all the regret of a victory that slipped away in the very last few metres.
