Palermo, 18 August (LaPresse) – The four security guards involved in the theft of the four works by Antonello da Messina, which were stolen on the evening of Ferragosto from the Regional Museum of Messina (MuMe), have been on compulsory leave since Sunday. They now face disciplinary action from the Sicilian Regional Government’s Department of Cultural Heritage. The measure will take effect as soon as the director, Marisa Mercurio, submits her report on the incident. Investigations by the mobile police unit have established that the alarm was triggered correctly and that one of the four security guards deactivated it, believing it to be a false alarm. The four security guards did not check whether the alert was genuine and, crucially, did not raise the alarm by calling 112. Furthermore, the four – two women and two men – were reportedly not in the control room with the monitors for the internal and external CCTV systems at the time of the theft.
