Milan, 20 August (LaPresse) – Regarding the “former Ilva affair”, it is well known that the consultation forum with the national trade unions in the sector has been permanently convened at the Prime Minister’s Office, coordinated by Under-Secretary Mantovano and comprising all the relevant ministers in their various capacities, ever since the current government took office. It will reconvene in the first few days of September to examine the various expressions of interest submitted in recent weeks regarding the future structure of the plant.” So said the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, in a letter sent to the Prefect of Taranto, Ernesto Liguori. “Mr Prefect,” the Prime Minister states, “I have read the request forwarded to me through you by trade associations in the Taranto area, asking me to chair a meeting on the former Ilva site whilst I am attending the opening ceremony of the Mediterranean Games. Similar requests have been sent directly to Palazzo Chigi by local trade unions. I am pleased that the applicants recognise the significance that this sporting event has, and will continue to have, for Taranto: it is the result of a financial and organisational commitment that has primarily involved the government.” “At the same time, it is my intention to convene, again at Palazzo Chigi, a specific round-table for the city of Taranto, with a view to assessing the possibilities for the area’s development through business investment to complement the former Ilva site” . “For this reason, whilst not ruling out dialogue with the organisations operating in the area, the roundtable for Taranto will primarily invite the national leaders of these organisations (alongside, of course, representatives of the Puglia Region and local authorities), which will give the working group the appropriate weight. I am therefore calling for a broader dialogue, to be held at Government headquarters, with the widest possible national involvement, as the situation demands,” the Prime Minister emphasised. “I can assure you that the Government regards the maintenance of significant steel production capacity as an objective of national importance.”
