Milan, Aug. 22 (LaPresse) – As expected, Tadej Pogacar did not disappoint. The Slovenian star of UAE Team Emirates won the first stage of the Vuelta a España, the 9.4-km time trial in Monte Carlo, and claimed the first red jersey. Pogacar, the recent winner of the Tour de France, finished with a time of 10’57”, the same time as Britain’s Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quick-Step), but with a lead of just 0.09 hundredths of a second, he is the one to wear the leader’s jersey. Third place went to Welshman Josh Tarling (Netcompany Ineos), +4″, who started despite the tragic death of his brother Finlay last week at the Tour of Portugal. Tomorrow’s second stage, the first road stage, will run from Monaco to Manosque over 214.3 km, almost entirely flat.
