(LaPresse) – Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist known for decorating paintings, sculptures and museum installations around the world with her characteristic polka dots, has died aged 97. The studio bearing her name announced Kusama’s death, which occurred in a Tokyo hospital on 14 August. Her repetitive motifs – in various forms reminiscent of nets, spirals or worms, but most often polka dots – danced proudly across her canvases, or appeared as shimmering spheres or points of light in her installations, in all their vibrant psychedelic glory. “She continued to paint right up until her final days, never putting down her brush, and carried on her exploration of eternal love and the endless soul,” reads the studio’s statement. “We will carry on Kusama’s wishes and, through art, continue to instil hope and strength for the future in people all over the world,” the statement continues.
