(LaPresse) – “Digital platforms must take full responsibility for their actions, which is why I have called for a fine of one billion zloty (approximately 230 million euros, ed.) to be imposed on Meta. Having analysed the documentation, including that received from Meta, as well as subsequent media reports on the lack of controls over published content, I have just sent a formal request to the European Commission to impose a fine of 250 million euros on the platform.” This is what Krzysztof Gawkowski, Poland’s Minister for Digital Affairs, writes in a letter sent to Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty. “Inaction and ineffectiveness in combating harmful advertising and fraudulent content targeting Polish citizens,” he adds, “will not be tolerated. I expect the European Commission to conduct the proceedings swiftly and impose the penalty. The evidence is more than sufficient. I also call on Meta to immediately introduce effective measures to eliminate scams, misleading adverts and the promotion of illegal applications. This ‘Wild West’ situation on the platform must come to an end.”
