The negotiations between the two clubs over Álvarez have sparked the biggest transfer saga of the summer in European football. Atlético issued a statement on Thursday, stating that its board of directors “unanimously expressed its full support for the club’s decision not to negotiate the transfer of Julian Álvarez to Barcelona”. “Atlético Madrid is open to normal transfer negotiations, provided they are conducted in a professional, ethical and respectful manner,” the statement read. “We fully support the position previously communicated by the club, namely that Barcelona has not met these requirements and, consequently, there will be no negotiations and no sale of Álvarez to Barcelona will be considered,” it added. Premier League champions Arsenal are also reported to be interested in Álvarez, whose release clause is said to be around 500 million euros. However, Atlético’s statement suggests he will not be leaving. “Atlético Madrid is confident that our player will understand the decision and remain focused on helping the club achieve its objectives,” the statement reads, “just as he has done during the two seasons he has worn our shirt.” Álvarez was left out of Atlético’s squad for the first La Liga match and was booed by the fans during Sunday’s second match, when he came on as a substitute.
