Frankfurt (Germany), 29 August (LaPresse) – Democratic MP Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is reorganising her team, with a series of departures and new appointments coming just a few months before she decides whether to stand in the 2028 presidential election. This is according to Axios, which reports that the progressive leader is also considering a bid for the Senate seat currently held by Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, which is up for election in the same year. Her long-standing campaign manager and senior adviser, Oliver Hidalgo-Wohlleben, will step down in September, having worked with Ocasio-Cortez since the 2020 Democratic primaries. Replacing him, Fiorella Bini, a long-time colleague of the New York Congresswoman, took on the role of interim campaign manager this month. Aya Saed, Ocasio-Cortez’s former legislative director, has also rejoined the team; she is now deputy chief of staff in her House office and a campaign adviser. Tanushri Shankar-Ross, who had left the team in 2023, has also returned in the role of senior adviser. Creative director Tyler Evans, however, left the team during the summer. According to Axios, the changes also coincide with an expansion of the responsibilities of chief of staff Mike Casca, 37, who had worked on Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign in 2020 before joining Ocasio-Cortez’s staff at the end of 2023. The MP has a small and relatively young team, but she can rely on her ties to Sanders and her political network should she decide to rapidly build a structure for a presidential or senatorial campaign. Hidalgo-Wohlleben told Axios that she had decided to take a break after working non-stop since the 2020 primaries. “Whatever lies ahead for Alex, she will have my support,” she added.
