Milan, 30 August (LaPresse) – Alessandro Di Battista had a brief telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani from the hospital in Havana where he is currently being treated. Sources at the Farnesina confirm that the minister called the former MP to offer his support and found him to be “combative in tone, with his spirits undimmed despite the difficult situation”. Tajani, the Foreign Ministry explains, expressed his solidarity with Di Battista, assuring him that the government would do “everything necessary for him, just as it must for any Italian citizen in similar circumstances”, and wishing him a speedy return to Rome. The Deputy Prime Minister, recalling his own past as a journalist, asked the former M5S MP what he was focusing on in his reporting in Cuba. Di Battista spoke to him at length about Cuba, emphasised the need to help the Cuban people and discussed conditions on the island. The phone call concluded with Tajani expressing his hope that they would meet again soon, “to go back to arguing about everything but not about solidarity amongst Italians and the paths to peace that we must build”.
