Madrid, Spain, Aug. 31 (LaPresse) – The Spanish government of Pedro Sánchez has decided to extend for another 15 days border checks on passengers entering the country from Italy by sea or air. Spain’s Interior Ministry told LaPresse. The checks were introduced by Madrid on Aug. 8 for an initial period of one month after Italy refused to lift its suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain. Madrid’s decision came after the government of Giorgia Meloni decided to extend the suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain for a further 15 days. “The decision,” the Italian Interior Ministry said, “was taken in line with the assessment carried out by the Committee for the Analysis of Immigration and Border Security, given that the factors underlying the reintroduction of the checks on Aug. 1 remain in place, while also taking into account the initiatives already launched by Spain, together with the European Union, so that” in Ceuta “the situation can move toward normalization in the near future.”
