Frankfurt (Germany), Sept. 1 (LaPresse) – Russia will respond in a “firm and devastating” manner to any further political and military escalations in the Baltic Sea. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said this on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum, as reported by Tass. “In the event of further escalation of the political and military situation in the Baltic, Russia’s response to the initiators of the insane anti-Russian adventures will be firm and destructive for them. They must know this,” Zakharova said. The spokeswoman specifically accused Germany of artificially fueling what she called an “imaginary threat”, namely the risk that Russian attacks in the Baltic region could take on a new dimension in the coming months. Zakharova then cited the strengthening of the military presence and defensive infrastructure on NATO’s eastern flank. Among the examples, she mentioned the Alliance’s ‘Baltic Sentry’ mission, launched in 2025 to patrol the Baltic Sea, and Germany’s participation in the Polish ‘Eastern Shield’ program, which envisages the construction by 2029 of fortifications, surveillance systems and military infrastructure along the borders with Russia and Belarus. The Polish program was subsequently integrated with similar initiatives by Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia as part of the so-called ‘Baltic Defence Line’, which also includes mine-clearance infrastructure, anti-tank ditches and other defensive works.
