The handover comes at a crucial time for Apple, with developments in artificial intelligence having triggered the biggest upheaval in the sector since Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in 2007. Apple has had a rocky start in the field of AI. Ternus will face challenges that will force him both to find ways to keep Apple competitive in the race for artificial intelligence and to manage issues relating to the supply chain and relations with figures such as US President Donald Trump. Cook has cultivated good ties with Trump whilst steering the company through recent global trade challenges, including Trump’s tariff war against Asian countries, where Apple has extensive manufacturing supply chains. Although he is stepping down as CEO, Cook is expected to help the company maintain a good relationship with Trump following his transition to the new role of executive chairman.
