Hybrid attacks are increasing across Europe and are now directly affecting us as well: the failed drone attack in Leipzig was a turning point.” German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said this while addressing the Bundestag. “We will not be intimidated by Putin, dear colleagues,” Klingbeil added, stressing: “We have a responsibility and we are up to this responsibility.” “Whatever it takes,” “everything that is necessary,” Klingbeil then said, defending increased defence spending and resorting to new debt. “We are doing what is necessary to guarantee freedom and security,” he stressed. “We are investing in our Bundeswehr, keeping pace with technological innovations and paying greater attention to defence against drones and cyberattacks,” he added. “Whatever it takes” also means “taking on new debt. Defending ourselves without new debt is like flying to the Moon without a rocket.” Klingbeil also launched a fierce attack on technology billionaires Peter Thiel and Elon Musk, saying he did not want “people like Peter Thiel or Elon Musk to ultimately have control over how our economy and our society develop in the digital age.” He then doubled down: “Two men who have little respect for democracy, two men who talk about competition but operate under monopoly conditions.”
