Real Madrid won 2–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu in this match, which formed part of the first matchday of the single-round group stage. The Nerazzurri put in a good performance in the first half, coming close to scoring on several occasions – particularly through Jones and Diouf – but were punished for two individual errors. A misunderstanding between Jones and Bisseck allowed Mbappé to open the scoring in the 14th minute; shortly afterwards, in the 23rd minute, Valverde doubled the lead by stealing the ball from goalkeeper Martinez, who had attempted a futile dribble and was dispossessed by the midfielder. In the second half, the Blancos came close to sealing the victory on several occasions, but with a quarter of an hour to go, Carlos Augusto latched onto a pass from Lautaro Martinez to pull one back, reigniting the hopes of the Italian champions.
