(LaPresse) – The number of irregular border crossings into the European Union continued to fall in the first eight months of 2026, down 35 per cent compared with the same period last year. This is according to preliminary data collected by Frontex. Nearly 75,000 crossings were recorded. The Central Mediterranean saw around 19,400 arrivals, 55 per cent fewer than in the same period last year, marking the second sharpest decline across all routes. “ “The decline, observed on almost all major migration routes,” explains the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, “reflects ongoing cooperation with partner countries and the preventive measures adopted in the main countries of origin, which continue to reduce the number of boats heading for Europe.” It is specified that the figures do not include the mass movement of people from Morocco to Ceuta that took place at the end of July.
