(LaPresse) – AfD leader Alice Weidel is calling for early federal elections in light of the crisis within the German government. “Given the dismal state of the coalition, from our point of view early elections would be the most appropriate solution,” Weidel told The Pioneer. “It must now be up to the sovereign people to decide who should lead the country out of the crisis,” she added, assuring that her AfD is ready. Responding to a question about whether the AfD would support a minority government led by Markus Söder (CSU) or Hendrik Wüst (CDU), Weidel said the party is “ready, as always, to reach out and engage in serious talks with anyone, if this serves the country’s best interests”. Söder, however, has ruled out a minority government. Among the conditions set out by Weidel are a “genuine and consistent shift on migration”, a change of course from the current energy policy and a return to “sound management of public finances”. As for Soeder and Wuest, the AfD leader added, it remains to be seen whether the two potential candidates for the chancellorship are willing to do so, “given the walls they themselves have built”.
