In its method because it was drafted and passed by a majority vote at the behest of a desperate Giorgia Meloni who, having failed to deliver on all her promises and the reforms she announced, is tailoring a new electoral system to suit herself to avoid defeat in the next election. They have rejected all the opposition’s amendments, starting with the one to introduce genuine preferential votes instead of the ‘fake’ preferential votes they proposed.” PD Secretary Elly Schlein made these remarks in an interview with *La Repubblica*, following the Senate’s green light for the electoral reform. “It is unconstitutional in many respects. For a start, the majority bonus is excessive: the winner can secure a number of seats that comes dangerously close to the thresholds required to elect the President of the Republic,” she explains. “In other words, it undermines the system of checks and balances built into our institutions to prevent all power from being concentrated in the hands of those in government. But I’m not surprised,” she added, “power – and how to preserve it – has always been the right’s obsession. By making the nomination of the prime ministerial candidate mandatory, Meloni is trying to achieve through ordinary legislation what she failed to achieve with the ‘premierato’.”
