Banks: ABI reports rise in loans to households and businesses in August, up 3.4 per cent year-on-year

Milan, 19 Sept. (LaPresse) – In August 2026, total lending to businesses and households rose by 3.4 per cent year-on-year, accelerating from the previous month’s figure (+3.3 per cent), continuing the upward trend in lending that began in March 2025. This is according to the ABI’s monthly report. For households, this marks the twentieth consecutive month of growth, whilst for businesses it is the fourteenth consecutive month of growth in lending. Indeed, in July 2026, loans to businesses rose by 4.1 per cent, whilst those to households increased by 2.6 per cent. Total lending to businesses and households “has returned to October 2022 levels”, commented the ABI’s Deputy Director-General, Gianfranco Torriero, elaborating on the report’s findings.
