These were the words of the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, in an interview with the daily newspaper La Stampa. “Mine can only be a statement of principle,” he explains. “I fear one thing, however: that if, in a hundred years’ time, the Left were to return to government, someone might argue that even someone with a headache, if they so choose, has the right to take their own life. I am deliberately using a paradox. They might say it; I’m not saying they will. Precisely for this reason, I believe we need to define as soon as possible the exceptional cases in which life may be sacrificed, when conditions exist such that it can no longer be considered life in the full sense of the term. I would do so. Do not ask me, however, when or how.”
