Milei began his speech at the UN by criticising the United Nations for “having set itself the task of defending the territorial sovereignty of its members” but “having decided to turn a blind eye to the situation in the Falkland Islands”. The Argentine president criticised the Sea Lion Project, an offshore oil exploration scheme for the northern basin of the Falkland Islands, and stated that it constitutes “an illegal act” as it has not been authorised by Argentina. “There is no shortage of words or resolutions, but what is lacking are consequences,” he said, adding that “this is why the Malvinas are not simply a matter between Argentina and the United Kingdom” but “also raise questions about this organisation’s ability to ensure compliance with its own resolutions”.
