The former Hollywood mogul, whose downfall fueled the #MeToo movement, was found guilty last year of performing a criminal sexual act on a former production assistant, Miriam Haley, in the bedroom of his SoHo apartment in 2006. Manhattan prosecutors had sought a 20-year sentence, while his lawyers had requested nine. Weinstein, 74, was first convicted in New York in 2020 for sex crimes, including the assault on Haley, and received a 23-year sentence. However, four years later, an appeals court overturned the verdict, ruling that Weinstein had not received a fair trial and ordering a new trial.
