We cannot respond to these challenges only after disaster has already struck.” Pope Leo XIV emphasised this whilst receiving members of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in audience, on the occasion of the Plenary Session on the theme ‘The Future of Science in a Changing World’. “We must move from responding to emergencies to prevention,” observed the Pontiff, “from vulnerability to preparedness, and from short-term measures to a wise and far-sighted vision for humanity. This requires a responsible and discerning approach to science that builds resilience: one committed to discovery, whilst taking into account, from the very outset, the consequences that scientific and technological choices may have for humanity and for the integrity of creation entrusted to us by God.”
