Milan, 24 Sept. (LaPresse/AP) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has arrived in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly. He is scheduled to meet with several world leaders – the presidents of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Panama and Ethiopia, the vice-president of Colombia and the prime ministers of Greece, Slovenia and Papua New Guinea – but not US President Donald Trump, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio or any Arab leaders. Netanyahu’s visit will be brief. His office stated that “many world leaders” had asked to meet him, but that the Prime Minister has a “busy schedule” and must return to Israel before the start of the Jewish festival of Sukkot, which begins at sunset on Friday. Today at the UN General Assembly, he and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are due to address the assembly; however, Abbas will join via video link as, for the second year running, the US has denied him a visa. Rival protests are planned to coincide with Netanyahu’s speech: CBS News reports that at midday local time, a rally will be held outside the UN headquarters to welcome Netanyahu, whilst another will take place to protest against the war in Gaza.
