Rome, 26 September 2026. – “In all the seizures we have carried out, whether in major complex operations or on the streets, we have never detected any traces of fentanyl, but this does not mean we should not remain as vigilant as possible.” This was stated by the Prefect of Rome, Lamberto Giannini, on the sidelines of the ‘Il villaggio della legalità’ event in Rome. “In other countries, this drug is widespread and there is great concern,” explained Giannini, noting that the recent theft of the substance from a healthcare setting “was very serious”. The Prefect then commented on the videos circulating online that purportedly show the effects of fentanyl on some people in Rome: “Regardless of their authenticity, unfortunately there are many drugs that have similar effects. The problem, however, does exist: the fact that we haven’t found it yet does not mean that attempts won’t be made to introduce it in the future. We need to be extremely vigilant in order to detect, including through investigative work, any changes in the area.”
