Rome, 26 Sept. (LaPresse) – A 24-year-old Nigerian national, who is alleged to have attacked and injured a woman near Tor di Valle railway station on the morning of Thursday 24 September, was identified and apprehended a short distance from the scene of the attack by officers from the Rome Capital Local Police, 9th Eur Group. The officers found and seized a knife with a blade approximately 7 centimetres long, on which traces of blood were detected. The incident took place at around 8 am on Thursday, when a Local Police patrol, carrying out a road check, was approached by a Romanian national who reported an assault on his partner, which had taken place shortly beforehand in Piazzale Ezio Tarantelli. According to the man’s account, the assailant had fled towards the railway tracks. The officers intervened, administering first aid to the victim, a 28-year-old woman who had sustained a wound to her arm. The woman was subsequently taken to hospital. The officers then began searching for the assailant, managing to locate and apprehend him a short distance from the scene of the incident. Shortly afterwards, a knife with a blade measuring approximately 7 centimetres was found nearby, bearing traces of blood; it was seized as it was deemed likely to be linked to the attack. According to initial witness statements, the 24-year-old also allegedly attempted to strike the woman’s partner and another person present at the scene with the same weapon, but they managed to avoid the blows. Investigations are currently underway to reconstruct the exact sequence of events and to clarify the circumstances and motives behind the attack. The 24-year-old, who has no previous criminal record, was arrested and taken to the Local Police station to complete the necessary formalities. A summary hearing took place yesterday morning, which concluded with the arrest being upheld.
