Milan, Sept. 27 (LaPresse) – An eventful afternoon last week at Rome Termini station, where Railway Police officers, in cooperation with Army personnel on security duty, detained a young Algerian national who was considered strongly suspected of having committed a robbery. Shortly before reaching Rome Termini station, the young man attacked another passenger aboard a regional train, restraining him and managing to tear off the gold chain he was wearing. Upon arriving at the station, the offender released the unfortunate passenger from his grip and attempted to leave, then fleeing towards the tracks, pursued by the victim. The prompt intervention of the Railway Police and Italian Army personnel made it possible to stop the man before he could disappear: once identified, he was taken to the Station Unit offices for further investigation. The young man, with several previous police records and no fixed abode, was arrested for robbery after fiercely resisting the officers and attempting to hide the chain’s medallion in his mouth, and was taken to Regina Coeli prison. A similar incident occurred a few days later near a side entrance of Rome Termini station, involving a Gambian man: he allegedly approached the victim from behind and, striking her on the back of the head, stole a necklace worth approximately 2,400 euros. In this case too, the robber was intercepted by the Railway Police, who, during routine dynamic checks in the vicinity of the station, were alerted by the young man’s running, with the gold necklace still in his hand. In an attempt to evade the checks, the man attacked the police officers, causing them injuries, but they nevertheless managed to restrain him. The foreign national was also arrested for robbery, resisting a public official and causing injury to a public official, and was taken to Regina Coeli prison. In both cases, the valuables were returned to their owners, who thanked the officers involved.
