Milan, Sept. 27 (LaPresse) – Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Pope Leo XIV’s special envoy for Ukraine and president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, will travel to Moscow today, where from September 28 to 30 he will hold a series of meetings in the Russian capital to discuss ways of resolving humanitarian issues and finding solutions to the Ukrainian crisis. Tass reports this. “Meetings with Russian officials are scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. All of this is part of the humanitarian mission that was initially entrusted to me by Pope Francis and subsequently confirmed by Pope Leo XIV. I was asked to support the efforts of the parties to address issues concerning children evacuated from combat zones, prisoner exchanges and problems affecting civilians as a result of the conflict,” Zuppi said. According to Zuppi, among other things, the parties will verify whether all civilians forcibly displaced by Ukrainian military forces from the Kursk region have returned home. “We are assessing all requests from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides within the framework of the dialogue already underway. We want to further develop this dialogue because we know how much suffering the war causes. We are trying to help bring it to an end,” the cardinal stressed. Russia’s ambassador to the Holy See, Ivan Soltanovsky, said in an interview with ‘Avvenire’ that “Cardinal Matteo Zuppi is always welcome in Moscow.”
