It was Codacons itself, following a series of discussions with Eni’s top management in recent days, that “called for the price cap measure as a temporary solution to the fuel emergency.” “Associations in the oil and fuel distribution sector are already up in arms and have announced measures against the price cap, which, in their view, would represent a distortion of the market,” Codacons explains. “This position is inconceivable, because obstructing initiatives aimed at limiting the relentless escalation of pump prices would amount to harming consumers and the entire country.” “Not to mention that, in a free market, every operator has the right to independently choose retail prices and set its profit margins, a freedom that cannot be defended only when prices are rising,” Codacons says. “Competition in the oil sector, especially at this time of serious emergency, should be encouraged rather than obstructed, and for this reason we are ready to report to the competent authorities any organizations that attempt to block Eni’s discounts, in the exclusive interest of Italian consumers who have been suffering the devastating effects of high fuel prices for months,” Codacons concludes.
