Switzerland: ‘No’ vote wins by 70.1 per cent in referendum on strengthening neutrality

Milan, 27 Sept. (LaPresse) – Switzerland’s neutrality will not be redefined. According to the final results, the people and the cantons rejected the referendum on neutrality – tabled by Pro Suisse and members of the Swiss People’s Party (UDC) – with 70.1 per cent voting against. All the cantons voted against it. With the ‘Safeguarding Neutrality’ initiative, groups close to the conservative right, as well as part of the left, sought to enshrine a strict interpretation of the country’s neutrality in the Constitution. The Federal Council and almost all the major parties, with the exception of the Swiss People’s Party (UDC), opposed this proposal.
