This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron as he took the floor to open the conference ‘At the Roots of Europe for Peace and Unity’ in the presence of Pope Leo XIV in Metz. “Seventy-five years after the Schuman Declaration, the world has changed, war has returned to our continent and Europe is shaken by the resurgence of empires,” he said. “As the dangers have grown in scale, our efforts for peace must rise to the challenges,” added Macron, calling for “action to preserve security and defend our values”.
