(LaPresse) – “Convenient words cannot change uncomfortable realities.” UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin made this remark in his speech at the EFC (European Football Clubs) General Assembly in Copenhagen, referring to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Ceferin quoted Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ to urge the clubs to say “enough is enough” and withdraw their support for Infantino, in response to the Swiss official’s handling of a plan aimed at involving private investors in a new commercial company linked to the World Cup. “Recently, the world of football has heard some very convenient words being bandied about: development, democratisation, consultation. Selling off part of football’s future does not become ‘development’ simply because it is labelled as such. Presenting national associations with a fait accompli does not constitute democratisation, even if it is called that, regardless of the size of the cheque. Secrecy does not become consultation simply because it is called that,” said Ceferin, as reported by the Danish media.
