Milan, 29 Sept. (LaPresse) – Nikola Jokic has reiterated his intention to sign a long-term contract extension with the Denver Nuggets next summer. Only this time, he added a caveat. “If they want me,” joked the three-time NBA MVP on Monday during media day. The decision to postpone the new deal makes sense from a financial point of view, but it has caused concern amongst fans. Come next summer, Jokic will be eligible to sign a five-year ‘supermax’ contract worth around $350 million. However, waiting also carries the risk that the player might decide to leave should the team run into difficulties. “I’ve been more than transparent about this. I hope they trust me,” said Jokic, referring to the management and his future with the team. “ “I was here when we were practically a mediocre team and we won a championship; we still have the ability and the opportunity to compete at the highest level and win another title,” said Jokic, 31, who was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft. “For me, it’s a question of sporting legacy. You want to become a legend and be remembered: I believe this is the right way to achieve that, in my view.”
