Milan, May 2 (LaPresse) – A 7.5 magnitude earthquake has been recorded off the southern coast of Chile, prompting a tsunami warning. According to preliminary information from the Chilean National Seismological Center, the earthquake struck at 8:58 AM local time, with the epicenter located 218.1 kilometers south of Puerto Williams, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The Chilean Navy's Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (Shoa) issued a tsunami alert, urging the evacuation of the coastal area of the Magallanes region and declaring a state of alert in a part of Chilean Antarctic Territory.
“We are asking to evacuate the entire coastal area of the Magallanes region. At this moment, our duty is to prevent and follow the instructions of the authorities. The regional and national disaster risk management committees (Codrig) are taking action. All state resources are available,” Chilean President Gabriel Boric wrote on social media.
