Rome, 1 Oct. (LaPresse) – Portuguese national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo faces a one- to six-month ban, as well as a fine, for leaving the team’s training camp. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed this, according to local press reports. According to the Disciplinary Regulations, the violation carries immediate and severe disciplinary consequences: “A player who, having been duly called up, leaves or fails to show up without justification for a training session, match, or activity of the national teams or related to the sporting representation of the FPF or Portugal, is fined one to six months and, furthermore, if he is a professional player, a fine of between approximately 500 and 1,000 euros.”Ronaldo left the national team’s training camp on the eve of the match against Denmark feeling “betrayed” by coach Jorge Jesus, who a few hours earlier had announced at the StaMpa conference that the striker would not start. The 41-year-old striker said that “in due course” he will explain to the Portuguese people the reasons” for his decision. Jesus had stated that he had no intention of fielding Ronaldo from the start but denied the possibility of a dispute between the two. According to the list of players published by UEFA – which always happens on the morning of the match – Portugal’s number 7 shirt will be worn by Rafael Leão. The Nations League rules require that players on the match sheet be numbered from 1 to 23. As for the exclusions for Thursday’s match, the list presents no surprises, given that Jorge Jesus had called up 25 players, while the official list can only contain 23. The coach had therefore had to exclude two players in previous matches, but now he has not had to make any choices, given that Cristiano Ronaldo has left the training camp and Francisco Conceição is unavailable due to injury, as announced in the press conference the previous day.
