Milan, 2 Oct. (LaPresse/AP) – An oil tanker was struck by an ‘unidentified projectile’ whilst passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday. This was reported by the UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre (UKMTO), which is part of the British Armed Forces, explaining that it had received the report from a third party. UKMTO added that the attack caused a fire and that the crew are safe. The oil tanker has not been identified and no one has yet claimed responsibility, but Iranian forces regularly open fire on ships passing through the Strait to maintain control over this crucial waterway. The Strait of Hormuz has been virtually closed since the start of the war with Iran on 28 February. Before the war, which began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran, around a fifth of the world’s traded oil and natural gas passed through this waterway.
