Bunia (Democratic Republic of the Congo), 2 Oct. (LaPresse/AP) – The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has now claimed over 4,000 lives. This was reported by the Ministry of Health, which stated that 4,018 people have died out of a total of 8,300 confirmed cases. The deaths therefore account for almost half of the confirmed cases, in what has become the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak in history. The country announced the outbreak on 15 May, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there are no known treatments or vaccines. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently raised the alarm regarding the virus’s rapid geographical spread into new health zones, placing a severe strain on already limited resources.
