Washington (USA), 2 Oct. (LaPresse) – Christa Pike remained in hospital, unconscious and on a ventilator, following the failed execution attempt in Tennessee. Her lawyers revealed this in a document filed on Friday. According to her lawyers, late on Thursday evening, hospital staff were working to save Pike’s life and to remove the pentobarbital that had been administered from her system. On Wednesday, Pike had been administered two doses of the drug during a failed execution attempt. In the court filing, her lawyers expressed the belief that problems with the intravenous catheters caused the pentobarbital to leak into her body tissues rather than into her bloodstream. “Apparently, no member of the execution team realised that the catheters were not positioned correctly or that the veins had been missed, and that the pentobarbital was seeping – in whole or in part – into Ms Pike’s tissues,” they wrote. The lawyers further stated that, instead of “rectifying this malfunction”, a second set of syringes containing pentobarbital was prepared and administered.
