Rome, 3 Oct. (LaPresse) – Protests over the housing crisis continue in Spain after the Congress of Deputies yesterday rejected the conversion into law of the two housing decrees introduced by Pedro Sánchez’s government. The Sindicato de Inquilinas has called for action, and demonstrations are planned in over 50 cities throughout the weekend under the slogan ‘Towards a general strike’. The protesters are calling for a reduction in rents, a halt to evictions and restrictions on speculative funds. In Madrid, where the protest began following the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, the march will set off at midday. In the Spanish capital, new protest tents have sprung up at the start of Calle de Preciados, the street linking the central Puerta del Sol with Plaza de Callao. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has taken the weekend to reflect on whether or not to call a snap election in the wake of the wave of public discontent towards the right-wing parties that have scuppered the decrees.
