Rome, Oct. 3 (LaPresse) – Almost half of voters in the United Kingdom support Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s personal preference for the UK to rejoin the European Union after the next election. This was revealed by a poll conducted by the Messina Group and published today by The Guardian. According to the survey, renegotiating relations between the UK and the EU could increase the Labour Party’s share of the vote by as much as seven percentage points if the prime minister proposed a new referendum and campaigned for the country’s return to the Union. Almost one-third of voters said that a referendum on whether to remain in or leave the EU would first be necessary, while more than one in six voters believe that a mandate obtained in a general election would be sufficient; the same proportion, meanwhile, think the decision could be made by Parliament. Some government ministers, concerned about the risk of reopening divisions over Brexit, are privately urging Burnham to proceed with caution.
