Tokyo, Oct. 3 (LaPresse) – Carlos Alcaraz remains on course to become the first player since 1994, after Pete Sampras, to win the ‘Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships’, the ATP 500 event in Tokyo (prize money $2,342,275), two years in a row. On the hard court at Tokyo’s Ariake Colosseum, the world No. 3 defeated ATP No. 37 Matteo Arnaldi 7-6(6), 6-1 after saving four set points in the tiebreak. In his 59th career quarterfinal, his sixth of the season, he will face Canada’s Denis Shapovalov (No. 46). The Canadian, making his third appearance in the last eight in Tokyo, defeated Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo (No. 31) 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Matteo Berrettini, ranked No. 47, also bowed out, losing 7-6(6), 6-1 in just over an hour and 45 minutes to Paraguayan Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, ranked No. 56 by the ATP and coming through qualifying.
