Milan, 3 Oct. (LaPresse) – “I started skiing in Ushuaia,” said the Italian champion. “I was skiing well and strongly as usual, and I was happy to be in Argentina skiing for the fourteenth time. Then I started experiencing particularly severe, intense and strange joint pain, compared to the usual aches and pains I have, which I can manage with anti-inflammatories.” This is how Olympic champion Sofia Goggia spoke to Sky Sport’s microphones on the sidelines of the Festival dello Sport in Trento, recounting the two viruses that had left her debilitated in Argentina and which risk jeopardising the start of the competitive season. “My legs felt weak, as if I’d lost my coordination, and I had tremors. I couldn’t manage the stairs; I felt an unusual sense of fatigue and exhaustion. I realised something was wrong whilst walking; I’d already been feeling unwell in July – I’d had a bit of an energy slump – but I thought it was down to the heat of this extremely unusual summer combined with overtraining,” added the champion from Bergamo. “At the moment, I can’t make any plans; I need time to recover from the effects of the virus,” she emphasised, referring to her early return from South America, where she had been training with the Italian national team. “I started feeling strange pains and, whilst walking, I realised something wasn’t right. Medical tests revealed a virus that is rare in adults and for which there is no cure. However, the worst seems to be over. I’ll try to recover and ski as strongly as ever. I need to be mentally sharp and have good motor coordination.”
