Milan, Oct. 3 (LaPresse) – The first major upset at the China Open. On the hard courts of the Olympic Green Tennis Centre in Beijing, at the penultimate WTA 1000 tournament of the season, with $9,415,725 in prize money, Elena Rybakina lost her first match as world No. 1. Since 1975, when the computerized rankings were first introduced, this had happened only once before, to Naomi Osaka. In her 50th appearance in the main draw of a WTA 1000 event, Rybakina eventually lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Alina Charaeva (world No. 118), the first Armenian player to defeat a world No. 1. Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek and Qinwen Zheng, among others, advanced to the next round.
