Rome, 4 Oct. (LaPresse) – “Today is 4 October. And everything is fine. A political movement, founded on 4 October 2009, was inspired by the values of St Francis; it viewed institutions as a service to citizens, rather than as a means of personal enrichment.” Beppe Grillo wrote this on social media. “On this date we commemorate Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, better known as St Francis of Assisi. We remember him for his commitment to peace: in 1219 he travelled to Egypt to meet Sultan Al-Kamil in an attempt to bring an end to the conflict of the Fifth Crusade; as the patron saint of animals and the environment; but above all for the rule of his order governing communal life, which must conform to the principles of: Brotherhood: that is, caring for one’s brothers and sisters and for all of creation; Humility: placing oneself at the service of the least amongst us and freeing oneself from earthly desires and the thirst for possessions, for these are the main obstacle that distances man from goodness and justice; and finally, Poverty: renouncing the possession of personal goods and instead sharing with one’s brothers, beginning with those who are most in need”, he adds on his blog.
