Milan, 6 Oct. (LaPresse) – “The mobilisation continues, perhaps with a general strike, and if the political forces that have defended the right to housing are able to put forward a united candidate, there could be some surprises.” This is according to Pablo Iglesias, former leader of Podemos and former Spanish Deputy Prime Minister, in an interview with La Repubblica. “The fact that there are general elections in Spain with the issue of housing at the centre creates interesting opportunities,” he says. “It is not a comfortable issue for the PSOE, because the Socialist Party has been far from proposing an alternative to free-market economics and from defending housing as a social right. However, it could lead to an unexpected electoral mobilisation. The polls suggest that the majority of right-wing voters are in favour of intervention in the property market.” For Iglesias, this parliamentary term “has shown that every vote was indispensable”. “If the proposal put forward by Irene Montero,” a Podemos MEP, “to hold primaries open to the public were accepted, then it would be possible. It is the most reasonable proposal on the table.”
