Milan, 6 Oct. (LaPresse/AP) – US President Donald Trump, during a rally held in Nebraska ahead of the 3 November mid-term elections, signed an executive order on stage which, he claimed, will bring down diesel prices by allowing anyone to purchase tax-free red diesel. For Trump, this is an “unprecedented step to reduce costs”, against a backdrop of growing pressure to tackle the problem of soaring prices. Diesel prices have soared due to the war in Iran, but red diesel is cheaper because it is exempt from federal and state excise duties. Trump claimed that the executive order will save the average lorry driver more than $100 every time they fill up and will reduce the cost of other goods, including food. The US president insists that the country is doing better than ever, even though Americans say they are struggling to afford basic necessities. “We are currently experiencing America’s golden age,” Trump said in Nebraska, “our nation is doing better now than it ever has before.”
