Rome, 7 Oct. (LaPresse) – “Today marks the tragic anniversary of the despicable attack carried out by Hamas against numerous Israeli civilians. Many young people, including those of other nationalities, were cowardly targeted, taken hostage or killed whilst gathered together for a festive occasion. Others were brutally murdered or abducted from their homes, with no mercy shown to children or the elderly. Acts of terrorism can never be justified or swept under the carpet.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the anniversary of 7 October. “The repugnant acts which, with extreme and inhuman cruelty, were committed on 7 October 2023 have plunged the region back into a dramatic phase of instability and violence. Added to the atrocious suffering caused are the hardships that, even more so since then, have been weighing on multitudes of Palestinians. The military operations carried out by Israeli forces in Gaza have caused human and material devastation of intolerable severity. At the same time, the process of eroding territories assigned to the Palestinian National Authority is unacceptable,” continued the Head of State. “The spiral of unprecedented violence must be halted, and instead the conditions – now deeply compromised – for coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians must be re-established within the framework of the ‘Two Peoples, Two States’ vision, so that they may live peacefully, side by side. Italy will continue to support every effort aimed at this objective. On this occasion, I wish to reaffirm the Italian Republic’s solidarity with the people of Israel, with the families of the victims and with those who still bear the scars of that terrible day, in the hope that the determination of the entire international community to build lasting conditions for peace and security in those tormented lands and amongst those tormented peoples will be strengthened,” added the President. “Acts of terrorism can never be justified or swept under the carpet. They will remain, for all peoples, a painful reminder that the barbaric and uncivilised scourges of terrorism, anti-Semitism and every form of ethnic and religious hatred must be condemned and firmly rejected once and for all, in the Middle East and throughout the world,” he concludes.
