Rome, 7 Oct. (LaPresse) – “As regards the issue of excise duties, we are, of course, always ready to take action again, particularly through the mechanism of flexible excise duties. We have refined this mechanism so that, when fuel prices rise, the additional VAT collected is set aside and used, where necessary, to bring prices back down by cutting excise duties.” So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during the joint press conference at the 13th Med9 Summit in Split. “As of September, we have around 160 million that can be spent for this purpose. What we are considering is whether it is more effective to spend these resources now, whilst cost-containment measures are still in place, or to keep them in reserve for when those measures come to an end – bearing in mind that this also depends on how the price cap holds up,” added the Prime Minister.
