Mexico City, 9 Oct. (LaPresse/AP) – Mexican authorities report that a riot broke out during family visiting hours at a prison in the state of Sinaloa, resulting in a tragic toll of at least 10 dead and 16 injured. The clashes took place on Thursday at El Castillo prison, in the port city of Mazatlán, in north-western Mexico. The Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat announced via its X account that nine inmates and one family member were killed in the incident, whilst 16 inmates were injured and taken to hospital for medical treatment. Local media reported that the inmates used firearms during the brawl. Following the clashes, members of the army, the National Guard, the navy and state security forces entered the prison to restore order. Mexico’s Federal Security Cabinet stated that the facility, which houses 1,800 inmates, is now “under control”.
