Palermo, 9 Oct. (LaPresse) – The provisional toll from the twin waterspouts that struck the port of Mazara this morning, before moving inland, stands at 11 injured. Two of them, a man and a woman, have been admitted to Mazara del Vallo Hospital. The man, aged 70, was admitted as a code red case with multiple fractures and is currently in the operating theatre to have them set. He will then be transferred to the trauma centre at Villa Sofia Hospital in Palermo. The woman, who sustained an injury to her foot, has been treated and is under observation in Mazara del Vallo. The other nine injured people – six children and three adults – were treated at Marsala Hospital. The six children are pupils at the ‘Alcide De Gasperi’ school in the Terrenove district of Marsala, which was hit head-on by the tornado. None are in a serious condition. The Trapani Local Health Authority has activated the Peimaf protocol for both hospitals, as well as the emergency psychosocial support team comprising ten psychologists specialising in emergency and urgent care, including support for the families of those hospitalised.
