Rome, 10 Oct. (LaPresse) – “The death penalty is unacceptable because it undermines the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be protected and the requirements of justice upheld without resorting to capital punishment: effective prison systems have been developed which protect citizens but, at the same time, do not completely deprive the guilty of the chance to redeem themselves.” Pope Leo XIV wrote this on X, using the hashtag “#NoDeathPenalty”. Prevost’s post comes at a time when there is talk of the live streaming of the execution in the United States of Nidal Hasan, the perpetrator of the Fort Hood massacre.
